Oral mucositis develops when cancer treatments damage the rapidly dividing epithelial cells lining the oral cavity. This leads to redness, swelling, and eventually the formation of painful sores or ulcers. Symptoms typically begin with a burning sensation and progress to more severe discomfort, including bleeding, infection, and difficulty swallowing. In severe cases, patients may require nutritional support due to their inability to consume solid foods.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most effective ways to manage and reduce the severity of oral mucositis. Patients are often advised to brush their teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush, use alcohol-free mouthwashes, and keep their mouth moist by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoiding spicy, acidic, or rough-textured foods can also help minimize irritation.
Several treatment approaches are used to manage oral mucositis, focusing primarily on pain relief and prevention of complications. Topical anesthetics and coating agents are commonly prescribed to soothe the affected areas. In some cases, doctors may recommend medications that promote healing or reduce inflammation. Cryotherapy, which involves sucking on ice chips during chemotherapy, has also shown effectiveness in reducing the risk of mucositis in certain patients.
Preventive strategies play a crucial role, especially for individuals at high risk. Regular dental check-ups before starting cancer treatment can help identify and address any pre-existing oral issues. Additionally, advanced therapies such as low-level laser therapy are increasingly being used to prevent and treat mucositis by promoting tissue repair and reducing inflammation.
